Most county offices will be closed Monday, Aug. 1, as a budget-related furlough day.

Monday’s closure marks the fourth of five unpaid furlough days for county employees during the 2011 calendar year, while further cuts in the 2011 budget have also been made.

In addition, the auditor’s document recording and vehicle and vessel licensing services will be closed from noon to 1 p.m., from Aug. 2 through Aug. 12, because of a temporary shortage of staff.

Those with documents to record, or who have vehicle or vessel registration or licenses to renew, are encouraged to do so either this week (through July 29), or, if possible, to wait until normal business hours resume after Aug. 12. The auditor’s recording and licensing desks are located in the administrative wing of the county courthouse.

Emergency and and state-mandated services will remain open. Those services include the prosecuting attorney’s office, county clerk, sheriff’s office, superior and district courts and emergency dispatch.

While the furlough-related closures will affect most county offices on Aug. 1, the county solid-waste transfer station on San Juan Island will be closed Friday, Aug. 5, and the Lopez Island transfer station will close Wednesday, Aug. 3.

County officials last week cut the equivalent of slightly more than six full-time positions from the county payroll. The recent budget cut either reduced or eliminated positions in the public health department, community development and planning, information services, juvenile curt and administration. The county has reduced its payroll by nearly 14 percent over the past three years.
