Friday Harbor’s newest tattoo shop, Rambler Tattoo, located at 777 Mullis St., Suite D, is holding a spring equinox event on March 21 from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. along with Smash Burgers from Tenth House. Shaylee Hollan and Sean Schultz, with a few guest piercers and artists, will be tattooing as many flash tattoos as they can in a 12-hour window to celebrate the first day of spring.
Customers can spin a literal wheel to see which flash design they’ll have tattooed, with options of 30-50 mini designs or 6 larger, more detailed pieces per artist. Attendees can expect tattoos starting at $60, in addition to raffles and prizes. This is the third flash they’ve done since opening.
“I love that the events bring the community together to connect and get tattooed!” Hollan said. “Flash days are a staple in tattoo culture, and it’s something to look forward to that shakes up our regular schedule. It gives us a chance to get our art out there and create freely. Plus, inviting guest artists and local vendors to join us keeps things fresh! And who doesn’t love a good theme?”
Hollan and Schultz, originally from Las Vegas, have spent the last five years traveling as tattoo artists and found themselves running a successful pop-up in Friday Harbor last July. It went so well that they opened the doors to their own tattoo shop, Rambler Tattoo, in November.
“Our studio is a curated space that feels both eclectic and inviting — where modern design meets the character of a traveler,” Hollan said. “With urban jungle aesthetics, rich greenery and texture, it’s a moody space welcoming both longtime collectors and first-time tattoo seekers into an environment that feels like an experience, not just an appointment.”
The two specialize in a range of primarily black and gray tattoo styles like fine line, black work, American traditional, floral/botanical and surrealism. Their typical hours are by appointment only, with “Walk in Wednesdays” each week from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“It feels surreal,” Schultz said when asked how it feels to open a shop in Friday Harbor. “It’s hard to express how loved and supported we feel by the island community. This has been a dream of ours for so many years, and I’m convinced this is the best place to make it happen. There’s something sweet about seeing so many of our tattoos out in the wild here. Whether it be at the grocery store, the vet clinic, or the beach, there’s always someone in a 10-ft radius that one of us has tattooed. As an artist, it’s insanely validating to be surrounded by people proudly wearing my work on their skin. I’m forever grateful for this island and what it has brought to my life.”
The flash event will welcome home guest tattooist Amaya Johnson, who grew up on the island and is returning from Bellingham to join the 12-hour event. Jupiter Dae and Salvatore Cindrich, also of Bellingham, will be guest piercers. Smash Burgers from Tenth House will start out front at 3 p.m.
