San Juan County is pleased to announce the swearing-in of two newly elected officials Dec. 30. The County welcomes incoming County Council members Kari McVeigh and Justin Paulsen who will be part of shaping the future of our community. Council member Jane Fuller remains on Council as she begins her third year in office. Superior Court Judge Kathryn Loring won reelection in 2024 and will be sworn in again.
Welcome, new council members
Court Commissioner Alan Hancock performed the swearing-in ceremony of Paulsen and McVeigh in the Superior Court Courtroom. Hancock served as San Juan County’s Superior Court Judge for 19 years and was appointed as a court commissioner in 2021.
McVeigh is the new County council member representing District 1 (San Juan, Henry and Stuart islands). She has a background in public education administration which began with a career managing large and diverse school districts. She became the superintendent of the San Juan Island School District in 2018 and later the superintendent of the Shaw Island School District. McVeigh has provided public and nonprofit organizations with leadership and effective communication consulting. She is committed to being responsive to the values and priorities of her community.
“I am deeply humbled and honored to serve as the County Council Member District 1,” said McVeigh. “The work of the County is so important to our varied communities, and I look forward to working with Council Member Fuller and Council Member Paulsen as we strive to improve the lives of our constituents and secure the future of our islands for many generations.”
Paulsen is the new County council member representing District 2 (Orcas and Waldron islands). He has a background in small business ownership and has served on multiple local boards and committees including the Ferry Advisory Committee, Orcas Island Parks and Recreation Commission, the Community Water Taxi and more. With a passion for collaboration and accessible government, Paulsen is committed to bringing all stakeholders in our community together to solve the critical issues facing our county.
“I’m looking forward to stepping into the Council position and getting to work for the residents of San Juan County,” said Paulsen. “Staff and elected officials have been incredibly welcoming and have given us a great start to what I hope will be several productive years to come.”
Looking ahead
San Juan County extends heartfelt gratitude to outgoing councilmembers Christine Minney and Cindy Wolf, whose dedicated service has greatly contributed to San Juan County’s growth and well-being. Over the years, these Council members have worked to address the needs of residents, enhance public infrastructure and champion initiatives that have positively impacted the lives of many. Their leadership, expertise and passion for our community will leave a lasting legacy.
Today’s transition marks a new chapter in the County’s ongoing journey, and in looking forward to the continued collaboration between the County Council, County staff and residents in making San Juan County a welcoming place to live, work and grow.
