Jane Allyn Broadwater Redfern
12/02/1951 – 07/11/2024
Jane Allyn Broadwater Redfern was born December 2, 1951, in Inglewood, California. She attended college at Riverside Community College and UCLA, and got a degree in geology while playing as a Pitcher on the local softball teams.
In 1973, Jane married Frederick Owens, and their son Samuel was born in 1974. Jane and Sam later moved to Friday Harbor in 1979, where Jane worked at the San Juan County Auditor’s office as a permit coordinator, and then as a Planner. Jane married Stuart Redfern in 1987, who preceded her in death in 2008.
In 2006, Jane suffered an aneurysm which forced her into retirement. She was a tough cookie, and though she was challenged by the effects of subsequent medical issues, she persevered independently for as long as she could before moving to the Seattle area to be closer to her son, Sam.
Jane was a huge fan of Teddy Roosevelt, and one of her most treasured artifacts was a photo of Roosevelt on a T-Rex. She enjoyed going to the theater and loved listening to music. She was especially fond of cats, and her kitty-companion, Cheddar, moved with her from Friday Harbor to Seattle, helping to ease the transition of the move. She loved going to the beach, spending time on boats, and going on long drives.
Jane passed on July 11, 2024. She is remembered as a strong, feisty, and spiritual individual, and a generous hostess, and identified strongly with her favorite bumper sticker, “What if the hokey pokey IS what it’s all about.”
Jane is survived by her son Sam, her brother Doug, Aunt Jeanni, and several cousins.
