Friday Harbor sports teams enter the postseason

Submitted by the Friday Harbor School District.

The first week of post-season contests has been completed for some, and for others it is about to begin. Good luck to all as they continue to advance.

Girls Soccer – The girls’ soccer team finished second in league. With this finish, they played Evergreen Lutheran on Nov. 4, in a loser-out/winner-to-state match. The girls lost a hard-fought match 1-0 in penalty kicks.

Boys Tennis – Boys tennis sent two singles and two doubles teams to the 2B tri-district playoffs. According to Coach Kyle Loring on Oct. 23, the FHHS Boys’ Tennis team traveled to Amy Yee Tennis Center in Seattle for the first 1B/2B district tournament in recent memory. Myles Posenjak played at #1 singles and Finn Graham at #2 singles for the team. The doubles teams consisted of Phoenix Daily and Liam Copley at #1 and Brandon Prouty and Owen Hill at #2.

“All of the guys played their best tennis that day, with Finn and Brandon and Owen losing very close matches in third-set tiebreaks after each winning one of the first two sets,” Loring said. In an impressive display of resilience, after each of these losses, the guys immediately grabbed more tennis balls and headed to an open court to keep working on their game. “Myles, one of our two seniors, finished his high school career on a high, playing strategic tennis that alternated between consistently keeping the ball in play and attacking when the opportunity arose. He made it to the championship match, where he hit many of his best shots all season, but lost a tough match to the #1 seed, a feisty player from Northwest Christian. Phoenix, our other senior, and Liam battled through to the doubles final, combining sharp serves and gritty hustle to get there, where they fell to the #1 seed from Summit Classical Christian.” Loring stated. Looking ahead to 2025, he added, “we’ll miss our seniors, but we look forward to continuing to build on this year’s successes.”

Qwynne Price-morris, Rose Jensen, Autumn Vaught, Liz Hough and Rylee Drew all qualified as a team by running personal bests at Tri-districts. The boys who ran their bests at tri are Ashley Hamlin and Neil Gresserh,” Turnbow said.

The girls continued on to place 8th at state over the weekend, according to Turnbow. Scoring points for the Wolverines were: Qwynne Price-Morris, Rose Jensen, Autumn Vaught, Liz Hough and Rylee Drew. Placing 17th Flora Compton and 4th in state Isabel Bashaw. This is only the teams second year in.
