Boys Soccer

The boys played the Orcas Vikings Oct. 15. They blocked several scores by the Vikkings through out the first half, except one. They continued to keep up the defense, however, the Vikings kept the Wolverines from scoring, making the final score 1-0.

Girls Soccer

On Oct. 14, the girls Wolverines’ soccer team played the Lopez Lobos at Lopez for a conference match against a much-improved Lobos squad. Despite tough field conditions that disrupted their possession game, the Wolverines’ rose to the occasion, playing with grit and physicality. Lopez took an early lead after a defensive miscue, but Friday Harbor’s backline, led by the Pignatiello sisters and senior outside defender Morgan Douglass, held firm. The Pignatiello sisters were especially key in shutting down Lopez’s long-ball attempts, while sophomore Nikky Clark Cole had a standout game.

In the second half, the Wolverines’ attacking players made necessary adjustments to apply constant pressure on Lopez’s backline. Sophomore captain Atziry Orozco delivered a perfect long ball to junior captain Charley Lawrence-Sampson, who netted the equalizer. Later, Orozco intercepted a pass from the Lopez goalkeeper and fired a long-range shot into the top corner, sealing a hard-fought 2-1 victory for the Wolverines.

Girls Volleyball

On Oct. 17, the Wolverines’ girls’ volleyball team hosted the Mount Vernon Christians. The game was played in the Turnbull Gym as usual and the crowd was full and very supportive, the gym was loud with the sounds of whistles blowing and fans screaming for their favorite players.

The game started at 4:30 p.m. and lasted about an hour. Before the game both teams demonstrated great teamsmanship by running in a circle to give high fives to each player, Spirits were up. The first period started with a serve from the Wolverines, and a good cheer from the crowd and her (the serverer) teammates. That serve started the game off with the first points coming from Mount Vernon Christian. Despite their best efforts the wolverines just could not pull ahead during the first period, and at the end the score was 14-21.

The Second period was a little different. The Wolverines were able to stay ahead for the first few minutes of the second period. We had some great plays, including a sliding save and a great spike for a point. However, after a while Mount Vernon started to slowly come back and take the lead. It was a very close fought battle on both sides and the wolverines nearly came away with a win in the second period with a final score of 16-25 which does not reflect how close it really was.

Third period time, Wolverines’ know they have to win this to stay in the game. Unfortunately the Mount Vernon Christians took a fast lead and held it through the entire third period, and despite some pretty amazing defensive plays by the wolverines we simply could not hold them back and the third quarter ended with a score of 15-25.

This team has a tremendous amount of spirit and while today wasn’t their day, they will have their day. They have earned it and it shows in the way they play. Wolverine fans couldn’t help smiling despite the loss, because of how clear it was that these girls were out there supporting each other and so obviously having a blast doing it. Go Wolverines!

Don’t forget to cheer these girls on when they will play Cedar Park back in the Turnbull Gym Friday, Oct. 25 at 4:30 p.m.
