Rick Hughes for county council | Letter

Anyone who knows me well knows that Rick Hughes and I are close. He is a good man, and a good friend. But that’s not why I am encouraging you to vote him back on to the San Juan County Council. It’s because, as a former councilman, he is an experienced and effective public servant.

When the original Exchange burned to the ground in 2013, the first person to call me was Councilperson Hughes. The first person to recognize the cultural importance of rebuilding The Exchange was Councilperson Hughes. With Rick spearheading support from San Juan County, and the financial support of so many of you in the community, we got it done. It would not have happened without the support of Councilman Hughes.

I have a huge amount of respect for Justin Paulsen. He is a smart, committed member of the community and would make an awesome Councilman. But I am endorsing Rick because he has a long and proven track record of getting things done here at home, and at the Capital in Olympia.

In terms of commitment to community we all owe our thanks (if not our vote) just for what Rick and Marlace did at Ray’s Pharmacy during Covid—making vaccinations available for the entire island!

Rick is a natural politician in the best sense. He will sit down with anyone for coffee, truly listen, and do his best to help. In these days of dystopian politics we are fortunate to be able to choose between great local candidates for office. Join me in giving Rick Hughes the nod. His connections, experience and character make him the best choice for Orcas Island and the County.
