With the help of the San Juan Island Community Foundation, P.I.P. will have another thriving year. The Primary Intervention Program or “Special Pals” is a longstanding program at Friday Harbor Elementary serving students since the 1980s. This is possible with the help of local donors. Over the years the SJICF has been a steadfast support when the need arises, and this year is no different.
P.I.P. works with K-3rd grade students and is designed to help them have the most successful school experience possible. As we know, a child’s life can be full of changes, most of which they have no control over. These changes can cause worries, anxiety, and stress that may interfere with their learning success. Students in the program are provided individual time to be in a playroom setting with a qualified Child Associate or “Special Pal.” The environment in the playroom, along with an accepting relationship with their Special Pal, gives them the means to process these changes, work through their feelings, and confront problems at their own level, pace, and language-PLAY. This gives them a sense of control and acceptance, builds confidence, and discover strengths. Their learning experience is also strengthened and they’re more likely to gain what their teacher provides. So a huge THANK YOU to the San Juan Island Community Foundation for answering the call to support P.I.P. this year. Your generosity will play a large part in the success of the program and the children it serves.
