Wolverines place in state tournament

By Jack Rice, Golf Coach

On May 21 and 22, Two Wolverine golfers participated in the state golf tournaments at the Tumwater valley Golf Club in Olympia. Jack Hess, Sophomore, returned to the high school state tournament and captured an 11th-place finish. Hess

turned his game around late in the season, by winning the Friday Harbor Invitational just two weeks ago.

Placing 7th in state in 2023 and 11th in 2024 speaks volumes or this young man. He is a fine golfer and with two

more years to go in high school, we can expect some great golf before he graduates.

Akira Tokunaga, freshman, played in her first state tournament and picked up an 18th-place finish.

This is an impressive performance for a freshman, scoring a consistent 102 on the first day and a 100 on day two.

Both Jack and Akira thought they could have played better but this is a big accomplishment to make it this far in

state competition at such a young age. We are extremely proud of both young student-athletes.

One of the other players who qualified for the State tournament was Junior, Morgan Douglass. She didn’t play

her best and missed the cut to play in the second day of the tournament. Morgan has a solid game and we

expect another visit to the big show before she graduates next year. Junior, Fisher Goosman, won his spot as

first alternate in a sudden-death playoff the week before. Unfortunately, no one stubbed their toe and all the

contestants showed up for their assigned tee time. Fisher has one more year of golf on the team and looks

forward to another go at making the state tournament.

Speaking of student-athletes, the Friday Harbor High School golf team won the Academic State Championship for

having the highest GPA of any team in the state. Congratulations for all that hard work; The entire golf team

are champions, all 19 of them.
