I am writing to bring attention to a pressing issue on San Juan Island that affects the safety and well-being of residents and visitors alike: the lack of bike lanes. As a student at Spring Street International School, I am passionate about promoting sustainable transportation options, but the absence of dedicated bike lanes on the island makes it incredibly unsafe to ride a bike.
San Juan Island is known for its natural beauty and recreational opportunities, but navigating its roads on a bike can be treacherous. Without designated bike lanes, cyclists are forced to share narrow roads with vehicles, leading to potentially dangerous situations. This not only discourages people from biking but also poses a significant risk to those who choose to do so.
Creating bike lanes on San Juan Island would not only improve safety for cyclists but also encourage more people to consider biking as a viable mode of transportation. This would have numerous benefits, including reducing traffic congestion, promoting physical activity, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
I urge local authorities to prioritize the creation of bike lanes on San Juan Island to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone who calls this beautiful island home. It is time to invest in infrastructure that supports sustainable transportation options and enhances the quality of life for all residents.
Thank you for considering this important issue.
