The Wolverines’ girls’ fastpitch team shut out LaConner April 13 15-0. They also won against Darrington March 20 and against Concrete March 22. They go up against Coupville April 16, at the Linde Fields at 4:45 p.m.
Wolverines’ boys’ baseball has also been exciting. On March 26 they won 13-2 against Concreet making 20 hits as a team. According to coach Jon Smith, Jackson Feliz pitched four innings, gave up 0 runs, and struck out 10. Mason Smith was two for three with a triple and three RBIs. Marcos Soto was two for three with a double. Floyd Holman was three for three with a double and four RBIs. Cody Anderson was two for three. Hunter Ross was fantastic behind the plate as the catcher for the last inning of the game.
Days later, against the beautiful backdrop of snow-covered peaks on March 29, the Wolverines won over Darrington with a final score of 9-5. Channing Kleine pitched 5 strong innings with nine strikeouts. Floyd Holman played a great game at third base making several great plays to get base runners out throughout the entire game. Catcher Mason Smith made a perfect throw from behind the plate, and Floyd Holman made a quick tag, to catch a base runner attempting to steal third base in a play that was as close as it could be, thereby ending a rally by Darrington and keeping the game within reach.
The last inning began with the Wolverines behind 5-3 but scored five runs to take back the lead. Elliot Samonas started off the inning with a walk and a stolen base. Ben Baisch smoked a double down the leftfield line to drive in Elliot and get us to within one run. Mason Smith and Cody Anderson had back-to-back walks to load the bases. Then, with two outs and down by one run, Joe Holt delivered with a clutch bases-clearing double to put us up by two runs! Will Youngsman followed up with a base hit to drive in Joe and make the score 8-5. Marcos Soto came on in relief for the last two innings with a scoreless last inning, ending the game with a strikeout to secure victory.
April 13 was another thrilling game against LaConner, with the Wolverines winning 5-4. The next game will be April 16 at 4:45 on the Linde Community Fields.
In golf, Coach Jack Rice said freshman Sam Herda set the pace for the second week in a row with a solid 48 at LaConner March 26. Jack Hess carded 4 pars in 9 holes for a second 48. It’s early in the season for Jack and once he figures out how to eliminate the train wrecks, he will be back on track for another return trip to the State Tournament. Because PJ, in with 49, and Andy, in with a 50, didn’t get to play with a La Conner player, their score was unable to count. Senior Ryan learned a good lesson today. His new clubs showed up and he was sure he wanted to give them a go without ever hitting a practice ball. As could be expected, he is excited to take the clubs for a test run tomorrow on the range. Junior Fisher Goosman was fighting a nasty cold but hung in there for a fine 49. Akira shot 57 to lead the lady’s team to their second victory this season. Morgan was close behind with a 60.
