Isac Chairez-Aguayo, a 22-year-old Friday Harbor man, is being charged with assault in the second degree and resisting arrest.

He pleaded not guilty to both counts during his arraignment on Jan. 30, and an Omnibus hearing is scheduled for March 6.

According to the Probable Cause statement, on Jan. 15, at approximately 12:37 a.m. a deputy responded to a call of aggravated assault at the San Juan County Fairgrounds. Upon arrival, the deputy saw the victim lying on the ground and wrote that they appeared to be unconscious. When asked what had occurred, witnesses stated that Chairez-Aguayo hit the victim.

When the deputy approached Chairez-Aguayo, he appeared to be stumbling, his speech slurred and the bottom of his lip had dried blood on it.

When the deputy asked Chairez-Aguayo what happened, he responded at first “nothing happened” and added that he supports the police, and then said, “the police did it.”

While waiting for backup, one witness stated that Chairez-Aguayo had become intoxicated at a party and the victim asked Chairez-Aguayo to calm down and leave. He then allegedly punched the victim in the face.

After backup arrived, the deputies attempted to secure handcuffs and Chairez-Aguayo tried to get away. They were eventually able to secure him and bring him into custody.

The victim was flown to an off-island hospital.

Chairez-Aguayo’s previous convictions include vehicle prowling in the second degree, theft in the third degree, malicious mischief and assault in the fourth degree.
