The girl’s team defeated Orcas 37-33, in a well-balanced performance in Eastsound.

The team was led by an impressive all-around game by junior McKenna Clark, who finished with eight points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and five steals. Senior Mia Blackmon was the game’s high scorer, with 13 points, including three three-pointers.

Senior Audrey Allen led an outstanding defensive effort, which also included key minutes from freshman Charley Lawrence-Sampson and sophomore Melinda Larson, in holding the main offensive threat on the Orcas team, Bethany Carter, to only 11 points.

The Wolverines took a 20-16 lead into halftime, but a strong third quarter from Orcas had the Wolverines down by two, 28-26, at the end of three. The team showed a lot of toughness and determination in turning things back around, outscoring Orcas 11-4 in the fourth quarter for the win.

I was really pleased to see how the team responded in the 4th quarter, and I think that experience will gives us some confidence in close games as the season progresses.

Our game against South Whidbey was scheduled for yesterday but was canceled due to the snow. Our next game is Tuesday, Dec. 27, at Blaine High School.
