The Friday Harbor boys soccer team got goals in the first 10 minutes of each half and conceded a single shot on goal, as they cruised to a 2-0 playoff win, their first since 2008, over the Evergreen Lutheran Eagles (8-6-2) Saturday, Nov. 1, at Franklin Pierce High School.

Arno Issanjou opened the scoring nine minutes in on a great individual run, slotting home with a low finish for his 17th goal of the season.

The Wolverines (12-5) would continue to have their chances, with multiple shots on goal, but none would find the back of the net. Friday Harbor led 1-0 at the half.

They came out of the break firing, with Will Christison smashing the ball into the far corner of the goal, after beating his defender with a burst of speed, in the fourth minute of the half.

Friday Harbor continued to pepper the Eagles goal, but superb play from Evergreen Lutheran goalkeeper Eli Weimer kept the Wolverines at bay.

Sam Paul-Barrette, Max Haenel and Sam Stewart all came within inches of making it three on the scoreboard, but the two goals would be enough, as the Eagles lone chance of the match would come in the dying minutes, when midfielder Josh Renner, who leads the team with nine goals, got through the Wolverines defense. Goalkeeper Dalton Ayers came up with a great save to preserve the shutout.

The win clinches a spot in the state 2B tournament quarterfinals for the Wolverines, the program’s first appearance at state since 2005. They will play two more district playoff games in the next week to decide state seeding, starting with a showdown Wednesday, Nov.5, against undefeated Mount Vernon Christian (17-0).

Friday Harbor came the close to handing the Hurricanes its only loss of the season on Oct. 7, but fell by a single goal in a controversial 3-2 defeat.

Kickoff for Wednesday’s playoff game is noon, at Mount Vernon High School.
