Senior attackman Ryan Guard had five goals and one assist to help lead the San Juan Dragons to a 9-6 win over Whatcom, Saturday at home.
The win propelled the Dragons (3-1) to the top of the Skagit Conference in the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association, Division II. The division consists of 29 teams in six conferences.
Senior midfielder Forest Dayton had two goals, two assists and four ground balls. Senior midfielder Weston Hedin scored one goal. Senior midfielder Alex Michael scored a goal and scooped up three ground balls.
Senior defender Michael Ausilio was key in offense and defense, assisting in one goal and getting eight ground balls into San Juan possession.
Goalie Calen Mehrer got the win, facing 11 shots in 36 minutes and making nine saves.
The underclassmen had a role in the team’s success. Freshman goalie Jacob Jackson served 12 minutes at the goal and had one save of five shots on goal. Freshman midfielder Tate Brumsickle had one ground ball; senior midfielder Josh Buck, one; sophomore attackman Kyle Hills, three; freshman midfielder Jacob Justiniano, one; senior defender Anci Melic, three; senior defender Niko Roiko, four; senior defender Brady Sundberg, one; and junior midfielder Cody West, two.
Next, the Dragons are off for spring break. They travel to Woodinville (1-3) on April 14, then host Providence (2-2) on April 17.

Senior midfielder Forest Dayton scored the winning goal in overtime to propel the Dragons to a 7-6 win at Stanwood.
All told, Dayton had three goals, three assists and two ground balls. Senior attackman Ryan Guard scored three goals. Junior attackman Nils Nelson scored a goal.
Senior goalie Calen Mehrer faced 17 shots on goal and had 11 saves for the win.
Senior Michael Ausilio scooped up 10 ground balls to fuel the Dragons’ offense. Senior midfielder Alex Michael had an assist and a ground ball. Senior defender Niko Roiko had three groundballs, senior defender Brady Sundberg had five, junior midfielder Cody West had one.
Notebook: Sophomore midfielder Michael Davis is expected to be back in play April 14 vs. Woodinville. He has been out for two games because of a head injury sustained March 20 vs. Skagit Valley.
