Five on one may not sound like a fair fight.

But when that one happens to be Coupeville’s Megan Smith, all bets are off.

Coupeville’s sharp-shooting guard poured in 30 points to lead the Wolves into the second round of the District 1 playoffs with a 51-44 victory over Friday Harbor Tuesday at Coupeville.

On fire from the opening tipoff, Smith doubled her per-game scoring average and proved nearly unstoppable on the offensive end, Friday Harbor Head Coach Eric Jangard said. The Wolves will square off against Nooksack Valley in the second round of the District 1 playoffs.

“We ran into a buzz-saw there,” Jangard said of Smith. “She was awesome. She pretty much knocked us out single-handily. We simply could not stop her.”

The Wolverines playoff hopes, and their season, came to an abrupt end with a loss in the single-elimination playoff contest. But they went down swinging. In fact, they stormed back into the game after falling behind by double digits in the opening half and at one point led by two in the fourth quarter.

Coupeville (4-16 overall) grabbed an early 9-0 lead as three different Wolves knocked down shots from beyond the 3-point arc in their first three possessions of the game. Friday Harbor kept pace for the rest of the half and went into the locker room trailing by 11.

“We talked about momentum, what it means playing on the road in a playoff game and keeping our composure,” Jangard said. “We played one of our better games of the season in coming back in the second half.”

The Wolverines, which finished the season at 3-9 in league and 4-15 overall, trimmed five points off the deficit in the third quarter and took a 2-point lead, their first of the game, with about three minute left in regulation. Sophomore Maggie Anderson tallied a team-high 17 points and fellow sophomore Kelsey Barnes, double-teamed throughout the contest, managed 11.

Trailing by two, Smith then pulled the rug out from under Friday Harbor’s comeback bid with a well-timed steal that led to a layup and a foul, and a trip to the free-throw line, where she put Coupeville back on top for good. They sealed the win with a 10-3 run down the stretch.

In addition to a game-high 30 points, Smith had seven rebounds and five steals. Teammate Kassie Lawson contributed eight points.

Friday Harbor point guard Brooke Jangard, a senior, tallied three points in the final game of her high school career. Freshman Larissa Nash and junior Kayla Short each had four.

Though they nearly pulled off a shocker, the Wolverines fell just short of matching Smith’s MVP-like performance.

“It was just too much Megan Smith,” Jangard said. “That’s the bottom line.”
