The Whale Museum is holding two special programs in October: the “Gear Down” Workshop for marine naturalists on Saturday, Oct. 20, followed by TWM’s Research Symposium on Sunday, Oct. 21. Both events will be held at the San Juan Island Grange hall and doors open at 9:30 a.m. for both events. On Saturday, the “Gear Down” Workshop will focus on research and recovery efforts related to Southern resident killer whales and salmon. Invited presenters include Kenneth Warheit of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife on regulations and practices regarding net pen fisheries and farmed salmon; San Juan County staff on the marine resource committee regulations and updates on the pilot flag study; and Taylor Shedd on characterizing foraging behavior in Southern residents using aerial drones. Other presenters will be announced soon. A no-host reception at Mike’s Café & Wine Bar will follow the event.

On Sunday, Nov. 3, the annual research symposium will be held. Presenters include Dr. Shawn Larson on whale sightings hotline and data; Jennifer Olson on marine mammal strandings and the San Juan County Marine Mammal Stranding Network; Elizabeth Seely and Taylor Shedd on the Soundwatch Boater Education Program, as well as recent experience with J-35. Other presenters will be announced.
