Two-story Spa d’Bune is showpiece of new business center
Dan Paulson originally built his new building at 669 Mullis St. as a place for the building and trade industries.
It evolved into a center for health care, personal care and home design. The Northwest architectural elements, colors and design of the building lend to the warm, homey atmosphere.
The building is commercial in design, but the roofline, overhang, and rhythm of the window pattern are familiar Northwest architectural elements. It’s also conservative in a Northwest way: The exterior trim is made of high-density recycled plastic, rather than old-growth timber. Windows provide for a lot of natural light. The colors of the interior walls and tile floors are earthy and warm. Doorways and trim are finished in clear fir. Upstairs, there are views of Friday Harbor Airport and the Olympic Mountains.
Downstairs, in the entrance to Spa d’Bune, a wall is graced by 71/2 foot by 3 foot sculpture by Lavelle Foos, “Shapeshifter,” sculpted from firefall redwood.
“We are very proud of our new space,” said Dan Paulson, who with his wife, Ruth Fleming, owns Paulson Custom Homes. He and architect David Kinderfather co-designed the building.
“Ruth’s landscape design and the great stonework by Dave Koch help to finish the building.”
The new building is currently the home of Paulson Custom Homes, Spa d’Bune, Islanders Physical Therapy and DKC Stoneworks (Dave Koch). There is one 600–square-foot view space available.
An open house is scheduled Sunday, 1-4 p.m. Catering by Avenue Catering.

n Paulson Custom Homes has been designing and building fine homes in the San Juans since 1976. Its homes have been featured in Fine Home Building magazine and books, Custom Home Builder, Town and Country, Architectural Digest, Seattle Home magazine as well as a magazine in Italy.

n Spa d’Bune, which comprises two floors, is a relaxing, warm retreat. The salon and day spa offers hair design, manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing, massage, and private steam shower.
“A steam shower flushes toxins from your system and makes your muscles more pliable so you can receive massage therapy deeper and quicker,” owner Dana Bune said.
Spa packages are available for individuals and couples. Spa services include steam, massage, facial, pedicure, manicure and scalp treatment.

n DKC Stoneworks has been building fireplaces in the San Juan Islands since 1991. In addition to fireplace construction, DKC Stoneworks provides a full range of masonry services. These include all types of stonework, brick, concrete block, tiles and hardscape installations. Complete design and drafting services are also available.
n Islanders Physical Ther-apy & Rehabilitation is a comprehensive physical rehabilitation clinic. Therapists work closely with physicians to help decrease the client’s pain, restore function and achieve optimal balance following an injury or illness.
