Summer Snapshot: Sheep moved from field to field the traditional way

Three generations of the Guard family — Lynette Guard, her son Rex, and several grandchildren — were present on the family farm Aug. 18. The reason? To move a herd of sheep across the street from Lynette’s property to Rex and Lisa’s.

Sheep were rounded up from various fields, their portion of San Juan Valley Road was blocked off, and even a few spectators stopped to watch the event.

Preparation aside, the process of actually moving the sheep across the road took only a few hectic seconds.

“They got a little out of control,” Lisa said of the herd.

Luckily, the Guard family’s years of farm experience kept things from getting too chaotic, and the sheep were successfully herded onto Rex and Lisa’s pastures.

Due to the summer’s unseasonably dry weather, it was especially important that the family move the sheep from Lynette’s fields to a different grazing area at Rex and Lisa’s.

Bill Shaw, executive chef at Roche Harbor Resort, was expected to purchase the family’s lambs.

“Bill has been really great. He always tries to use local meat on his menus,” Lisa said. “You should try the lamb burger. It’s really good!”
