A cell phone service will apply for town lodging tax money to build a new cell tower in Friday Harbor.
The spin? The cell tower will feature a bungee-jumping platform. The service believes bungee jumping will be a tourism draw and will satisfy state law requiring that lodging tax revenue be used only for “tourism-related facilities.”
The state auditor’s office would not respond to the Town Council’s inquiries of whether the service meet the requirements for use of lodging tax funding. To assuage concerns and bolster the multi-use tower’s image as a tourism draw, proponents are considering adding a tanning booth at the top of the tower.
