After a festive homecoming spirit week, the Wolverines football team dominated the Lummi Nation Blackhawks on Friday, Oct. 20.
The Wolverines defense was put to the test early in the game. The Blackhawks scored the first touchdown of the game with 6:25 on the clock in the first quarter. Wade Swirtz scored first for the Wolverines in the second quarter and the extra point by Milo Geiser was good, making the score 7-6. With just seconds on the clock before halftime, Swirtz scored another touchdown with a clean extra point by Geiser giving the Wolverines the lead at 14-6. Spirits remained high in the third quarter as Geiser scored a field goal making the score 17-6. Two noteworthy pickoffs by the Wolverines brought cheers from the crowd; one by Gavin Mason and the other by Swirtz, which gained the Wolverines a 25-yard return. Swirtz scored the final touchdown of the game with 6:02 on the clock in the fourth quarter. The Wolverines celebrated on their home field with a score of 23-6.
According to Bruce Bennett, former Journal reporter, Friday’s 23-6 homecoming win over Lummi was the 100th time local fans have celebrated a win at home since the program started in 1973.
The Wolverines first victory was 28-0 against Concrete on Sept. 29, 1973.
