We are pleased to announce that the UW Friday Harbor Labs’ 17th Jazz at the Labs, our fundraiser supporting the Friday Harbor Labs K-12 Science Outreach Program (FHLSOP), was a tremendous success! Aug. 12, was a breezy but pleasant evening of generous giving, energizing music, great food and fabulous wine from Mike’s Café and Wine Bar and San Juan Vineyards. This year’s “Fund-a-Need” effort raised funds to support two engaging FHLSOP science programs — the high school Biotech Labs at Friday Harbor High and Spring Street International School; and the Friday Harbor Elementary School’s fourth grade Nearshore Fish Habitats Projects. The audience was incredibly generous responding to a 1:1 match opportunity from a fabulous supporter of the FHLSOP. Matched funds will be added to the new UW Friday Harbor Laboratories Science Outreach Program K-12 Endowed Fund supporting the FHLSOP in perpetuity.

This event’s fundraising supports our FHLSOP projects at every grade level in the San Juan Island public schools and the Spring Street International School. In 2017-18, we will work with approximately 740 students and 25 teachers. The goal of the FHL Science Outreach Program is to get students actively involved in the process of science. Our program gives students the opportunity to ask questions and collect data while participating in experiments and dynamic fieldwork.
