San Juan Singers search for home in spring concert

Submitted by San Juan Singers

The San Juan Singers offer a lively musical exploration on the meaning of home in their spring concert on at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8 at San Juan Community Theatre.

This year’s concert features arrangements by San Juan Island’s own Bert Dayton. Singing and playing their own compositions will be local artists Deb Strasser and Teddy Deane. The chorus will sing back up to Deane’s saxophone and keyboard works. Kirk Furhmeister will do a duet with Deb Strasser about which home location rules. Local artist Ladd Holroyd offers a fresh look at home with his original composition. Well-known cellist Sasha von Dassow will accompany the chorus as well as act as the emcee.

The island’s community chorus, under the direction of Angel Michaels, musically answers the questions “Where do you find home?” and “What does home mean to you?.” Some of the songs are sentimental, romantic or funny. To make one’s mouth water, the singers search for homey apple pie. “Island in Space” by Kirke Mechem allows the singers to see how our planet looks from space. How the earth is home to us all rings out in “Chief Seattle’s Psalm” by Daniel Moe. Finally, the chorus will come home to Friday Harbor, circa 1916, with “A Song of San Juan,” composed by Olive Kirk D’Arcy.

Tickets are available at San Juan Community Theatre’s Box Office at 378-3210 or www.sjctheatre.org, as well as any singer.
