Susan Harris died peacefully Dec. 8, 2016 in Friday Harbor. Born in Seattle on May 10, 1932, she grew up with her parents, Richard and Elizabeth Anderson, and five siblings, Jeremy, David, Richard, and Elizabeth on Mercer Island. Susan graduated from Helen Bush School and attended Whitman University.
She married Andrew J. Harris of Seattle in 1953. The couple moved back to Mercer Island in 1958. They had six children: John (Yvonne), Andrea (Greg), Stuart (Lisa), Amy, Richard, and Sam (Erika).
Susan moved to San Juan Island in 1983. She had a long and happy employment at Browne Lumber, and made friends with everyone she came in contact with. She enjoyed feeding the resident birds, gardening, doing crosswords, cooking and watching PBS. Her community activities included singing tenor in the San Juan Singers and volunteering with the Hospice of San Juan.
Susan is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jeremy and her son Richard. She is survived by three of her siblings, her five children, her eight grandchildren and her large island family.
To those fortunate to call Susan a friend, they knew there would always be a pot of coffee brewing and a place at her kitchen table. Susan was sincerely interested in everyone she met, gave advice when asked yet supported any decision made. She always left people feeling encouraged, uplifted and loved.
A celebration of life will be held in the spring of 2017 at Roche Harbor Resort.
