Colton Harris-Moore, known as The Barefoot Bandit, is set to be released from prison into a work-release program at the end of July of this year. His mother, though, is fighting end stage lung cancer and Harris-Moore fears that he will not be released in time to see her.

Accused of more than 100 thefts during a two-year crime spree, including multiple break-ins on Orcas in 2010, Harris-Moore was finally apprehended in the Bahamas that year after leading police on an international chase. He has been at the Stafford Creek Corrections Center near Aberdeen since 2012, when he was sentenced and given six years in a state facility, followed by a federal sentence of seven years. During that time he sold the rights to his story to 20th Century Fox for just over a million dollars, the vast majority of which will go to his victims as repayment for his crimes.

Harris-Moore’s mother, Pam Kohler, was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer last year and is currently battling pneumonia and anemia at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, according a recent article in the Herald Net. According to doctors she has three to six months left to live. In the article by the Herald Net, Harris-Moore mentioned the passing of his beloved dog last year and his fear that his mother will pass before he is able to visit her.

“By the time I get out of jail, everything I loved might well be dead,” he told the reporter.
