The San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls.
July 4: Erratic driving led to the arrest of a San Juan Island woman for DUI following a traffic stop near the intersection of Guard Street and Tucker Avenue.
The 53-year-old, who reportedly committed an assortment of traffic violations after backing out of a downtown parking space, was taken into custody at about 10:30 p.m.
July 9: A total of $500 in quarters kept in three separate containers disappeared from an Orcas Island home in an apparent theft.
The owner of the home suspects her son’s girlfriend, a 41-year-old woman, may be the culprit.
July 10: A Friday Harbor man accidentally fired a round from his handgun into his bedroom floor after being awakened by the sound of someone entering his Geneste Street home through a downstairs window at about 2 a.m.
The 46-year-old reportedly hadn’t heard his wife’s friends, who had come to collect some belongings, knocking on the couple’s front door earlier and was startled by the noise.
No injuries were reported.
July 11: The Orcas Island High School football field sustained an estimated $2,000 damage by someone “doing doughnuts” on the turf.
Authorities determined that the wheelbase of the vehicle involved in the vandalism measures 6 feet 2 inches wide.
— A tip from a witness led to the arrest of an 18-year-old San Juan Island man accused of punching and deliberately breaking a $50 flower vase at the Port of Friday Harbor.
Though the man and a friend had left the scene, authorities reportedly tracked down the suspect based on the license number of his vehicle, which the witness provided.
He was taken into custody at about 10 p.m.
July 13: Excessive speed led to a late-night arrest of a San Juan Island man for DUI following a traffic stop near the intersection of Cattle Point Road and Heritage Farm Lane.
The 60-year-old, who also was ticketed for driving without insurance and speeding, was pulled over at about 2 a.m.
July 14: Erratic driving and a mid-afternoon collision with a tree near the ferry landing in Friday Harbor prompted the arrest of an Orcas Island man for DUI.
Witnesses claim the 49-year-old, who reportedly flunked a trio of field sobriety tests, hit the tree with a crane attached to his semi-truck, parked the vehicle and then strolled over to a nearby espresso shop to get a cup of coffee.
He was also charged with reckless driving, driving with a suspended license and driving without a court-ordered ignition interlock device.
July 15: A van that crashed into a fence at Buck Park and got stuck caused an estimated $10,000 in damage in an apparent episode of vandalism on Orcas Island.
The driver of the van, which reportedly was stolen, fled the scene and could face charges of felony vandalism, trespassing and auto theft if apprehended.
— An Orcas Island woman believes someone made themselves at home after breaking into her sister’s home in the 1200 block of Rosario Road.
The intruder reportedly racked up a $270 phone bill by calling 1-900 numbers, drank a bottle of white wine, broke a plate and stained the bed sheets during the apparent home invasion.
July 16: A Tacoma woman faces a charge of marijuana possession, a misdemeanor, after the U.S. Coast Guard allegedly found pot onboard her boat.
The 46-year-old was taken into custody by local authorities at Roche Harbor at about 3 p.m.
July 17: A San Juan Island man was arrested for DUI and hit-and-run following a late-night collision with a parked car.
The 30-year-old, who allegedly caused $1,500 damage to a woman’s vehicle following the collision in the 100 block of Marguerite Place, was taken into custody at about 11 p.m.
July 18: A complaint about noise from a late-night party — and an earful of obscenities directed at an officer — led to the late-night arrest of a San Juan Island man on a trio of misdemeanor charges.
The 58-year-old reportedly stuck his head out the window of a second-floor apartment on Argyle Avenue when an officer arrived to investigate, unleashed a tirade of profanities and refused to identify himself.
He was taken into custody shortly before midnight as the tongue-lashing continued outside the apartment and charged with disorderly conduct, obstructing an officer and a noise violation.
— Alleged death threats and a warrant led to the arrest of a San Juan Island man following an altercation with an employee at a Gilbert Lane horse ranch.
The 48-year-old, wanted in Mount Vernon for failing to appear in court on a DUI charge, reportedly claimed to have a gun during the confrontation and, after officers tracked him down, was taken into custody at about 11 p.m. on the warrant and a charge of felony harassment.
July 19: A warrant and a late-night collision in a stolen pickup led to the arrest of a Lopez Island near the intersection of Fisherman Bay and Ferry roads.
The 29-year-old, found near the scene several hours after the collision occurred, was taken into custody shortly after midnight on a warrant issued in Yakima. The pickup reportedly disappeared from the parking lot of a Lopez Village restaurant in an apparent theft earlier in the night.
— The interior of the snack shack at the Friday Harbor Elementary School ball fields was smothered in hot chocolate powder by someone who may have entered through an unlocked window.
The shack required cleanup but reportedly was undamaged in the apparent episode of vandalism.
