San Juan Island public schools will start 1.5 hours late and buses will use snow routes today, for the second consecutive day.

Island roads were expected to be icy this morning, following three days of frigid temperatures – Monday’s early-morning low of 13 was the coldest since 1990.

Today, the National Weather Service forecasted sunny skies with highs in the upper 20s to mid 30s and a northeast wind of 10-15 mph. A chance of snow is forecasted after midnight, with lows in the 20s and a southwest wind around 10 mph shifting to the south 10 to 20 mph after midnight. Plan for snow – one to two inches – on Wednesday, with highs in the 30s and a southeast wind 10-20 mph shifting to the north 10-15 mph in the afternoon.

This morning at 5:40 a.m., Friday Harbor Airport was reporting temperatures of 21 degrees, 50 percent humidity, calm, with clear skies and visibility of 10 miles.

Monday, public safety officials were advising islanders: If you don’t have to travel the island’s icy roads, don’t. If you do, drive slowly and keep a safe distance between your vehicle and other vehicles. Keep food, water and blankets in your vehicle. At home, you should have a week’s supply of food and water in the event the island loses power or the storm worsens.
