The Wolverines beat back a late-game comeback bid in the decisive game of the match to seal a victory in a see-saw battle Tuesday, at home, over Orcas.
With the best-of-five match tied at two games apiece, Friday Harbor grabbed an early 8-2 lead, bumped the advantage up to 12-5 advantage midway through the final bout and then tallied three of the next seven points to claim a 15-9 win in the finale, and the match by a final score of 3-2.
With the victory, the second this season over the Vikings, the Wolverines remain undefeated, at 5-0, on the year.
After losing five of the team’s starting six from a year ago to graduation, even some of Wolverines are a bit surprised to begin the season with five consecutive wins.
“I’ve never been on a team here that’s been 5-0,” said junior Maddie Williamson. “It’s pretty cool. We all get along with each other really well and I think it just brings us all together even more.”
The Wolverines are home Thursday, Oct. 10, to host Northwest 1A/2B League rival Mount Vernon Christian (7-3), beginning at 4:30 p.m. They travel to Nooksack Valley, Saturday, Oct. 12, to face the Pioneers, a Division 1A regional rival.
