San Juan County voters approved the renewal of the Proposition 1 levy lid lift.
The renewal will end in 2020 and produce roughly the same amount of annual revenue as the current levy, about $1.1 million, which is set to expire in 2015.
With a total of 5,645 ballots tallied on the Nov. 4 election night, an initial voter-turnout of 47 percent, “Yes” votes for Prop. 1 outnumber “No” votes 3,264 to 2,151, or 60 percent versus 40 percent.
The county Election department estimates about another 2,000 ballots to count before final results are certified.
The levy is 18 cents per $1,000 assessed value. The amount generated equals about 20 percent of the property tax levy that helps support the county general fund.
The revenue is dedicated to help finance senior services on all three major islands; WSU Extension programs; operation of county parks; support for county fair; public health services on all three islands; work release program; victim services; emergency management services; maintenance of county buildings and grounds; Islands’ Oil Spill Association equipment assistance.
