Now with something to shoot for, Friday Harbor senior Dasuni Gurushinge is starting to believe in broken records.
With a jump of 30’ 10.5”, the final of three at Friday Harbor’s home meet March 28, Gurushinge landed just three feet short of the school record.
And that was on a bad ankle, and with another six or so inches to spare at the take-off line.
“I did better than I expected,” Gurushinge said. “I’d never really done the triple jump before this season so I never had a goal. Then I saw the record.”
Gurushinge is no one trick pony, not by a long shot. She also competes in the 100 meter dash, taking first place March 28, and on the 2-x-400 meter relay team.
With four regular-season meets yet to come, though none at home, and with the post-season still ahead, Head Coach Darrin Scheffer believes Gurushinge has a good shot at etching her name into the record books.
“She’s been coming on strong,” he said. “I think she’s got good chance.”
