A state certified hunter education course begins Wednesday, Oct. 3, on San Juan Island.
Sponsored by Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife, the four-day course is taught by WDFW-certified instructors and focuses on three priority topics: firearms and outdoor safety, wildlife management and hunter responsibility.
Class days and hours are Wed-Fri, 3:15-6:15 p.m., at Friday Harbor High School, 45 Blair Ave; Saturday, Oct. 6, in the field, 9 a.m. to noon.
The course provides 16-plus hours of instruction in 4-6 sessions and consists of lectures, videos and hands-on training exercises. Successful participants must pass a written test, demonstrate safe firearm handling skill and a positive attitude. No minimum age is required to enroll, however, instructors may require a parent or guardian to attend all classes with those under the age of 12.
