Bernice Anita Mason, 95, of Friday Harbor, Wash., died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010 at Life Care Center of the San Juan Islands.

Grandma was a devoted wife and very loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was born on San Juan Island and lived here all her life. She loved the simple island life and being close to her family. Bernice was close to and loved her siblings: Mildred, Elaine, and brother, Walt.

When she was young, she loved music and that stuck with her all of her life. She was class salutatorian and when she and Bill were young newlyweds they enjoyed attending town socials, playing cards and dancing.

Together, grandma and grandpa could grow anything in their garden. They grew every kind of berry and apple. Grandma was a firm believer in “An Apple A Day” and she did. She grew beautiful roses of multiple varieties. She could sew anything, knit, crochet and make quilts. She was a great baker and anyone who’s ever eaten her bread or cinnamon rolls would agree.

Bernice took wonderful care of her home and her family. She was so very loving and always gracious and kind. Throughout her life, she was faithful and devoted to God. She had a beautiful soul and will surely be rewarded.

Bernice is survived by her husband, William; son and daughter-in-law, Vaughn and Laurie Mason; grandson and spouse, Shane and Brea Mason; granddaughter, Tami Hayes; great-grandchildren, Alex Hayes, Gavin Mason, Ella Mason and Jack Mason.
