Joan Komen passed away July 23 at her home in Roche Harbor after a courageous two-year struggle with ovarian cancer.

She was 71. She, her husband Richard, and Saltchuk Resources own and operate Roche Harbor Resort.

A celebration of her life will be held at Roche Harbor Resort Pavilion on July 29 at 2 p.m.; and at Seattle Golf Club on Aug. 5 at 4 p.m.

She received a multitude of treatments during the past two years but never complained, was always cheerful, and lived a full and energetic life until the past month.

Joanie was born in Seattle on July 13, 1938 to Cliff and Lou Romstead. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1956 and went to the University of Washington where she met the love of her life, Rich Komen. They were married in 1959 and have three sons, Mark, Greg and Brad.

Joanie was a huge Husky fan, an avid golfer and an excellent cook. She developed many of the recipes at Restaurants Unlimited Inc., including Clinkerdagger’s signature dessert, “Burnt Cream.” She was instrumental in the start up of their first business in 1961, Volume Service Co., the food concessionaire at Husky Stadium.

She also loved gardening (winning several blue ribbons for her vegetables and flowers at the San Juan County Fair), and enjoyed her daily walks and keeping physically fit.

Joan and Rich spent most of the winter at their beautiful home in Wailea, Maui, but called Roche Harbor their home where they spent most of the year. Joan was a member of Seattle Golf and Country Club, and was past women’s division captain at Wailea Golf Club in Wailea.

She was devoted to her loving family and her many friends and was an inspiration to all with her warm and caring personality.

Joanie is survived by her loving husband, Rich; her sons, Mark, Greg and his wife Shannon, Brad and his wife Janet; brother, Bob Romstead and his wife Walda; and her grandchildren, Olivia, Jacqueline, Kyle, Bo, Quinn, Brittany, Riley, and Ellie.

Rest in peace, Joanie, you will be missed by everyone.
