C. James (Jim) Coughlin died on March 16, 2010, after a long illness. He was 71.

Jim was born in Veblen, S.D., to Birinus (Jankord) and Edward Coughlin on Dec. 6, 1938. He lived most of his life in the Pacific Northwest, graduating from Seattle Prep and Seattle University, and obtaining his master of social work from the University of Washington in 1965.

Jim served 22 years in the practice of adult corrections, serving as chief of corrections for King County, then chief of corrections for Pierce County. In his retirement, Jim worked as a consultant, taught at Seattle Central and Edmonds Community Colleges, and enjoyed time spent on Lopez and vacationing in Mexico.

Jim and his wife, Flora, purchased property on Lopez Island in 1964, and spent as much time as possible at their house on Mud Bay. His particular joys included pickle ball at the Hoedemakers’ farm, picnics on Ram Island, golf at the Golf Club, and clam bakes on the Fourth of July weekend.

Friends and family will remember Jim as a storyteller with a wealth of stories, both fact and fiction.
