The Friday Harbor boys basketball team jumped out to an early lead in a 55-45 start-to-finish victory at home, Saturday, over South Whidbey.

Senior C.J. Woods scored eight of 10 first-half points in the opening period to help push the Wolverines out in front in early stages of the non-conference contest. Woods tossed in 16 points for the game to lead the Wolverines.

Leading 16-12 at the end of the first period, Friday Harbor weathered a barrage of three-pointers by Falcons senior Brandon Asay, three in the first half and a total of six in the game, widened the advantage late in the second period to take a 30-22 lead at the half. Sophomore Luke Stromberg scored six points in the second period.

With the win, the Wolverines evened their record, at 1-1, and erased the sting of a season-opening 20-plus point drubbing at home, Dec. 3, to Burlington Edison.

“I think our intensity was the  biggest difference between the first game and second game,” said point-guard Sergio Trujillo. “Our focus was on playing together and playing as a unit, especially on our press.”

After the break, the Falcons scored the first two buckets of the third period to shave the deficit down to three, at 30-27. Friday responded by scoring 17 of the period’s next 20 points to bump the lead to 47-30 by the end of the third. Otis-Cooper West had seven points in the third quarter and 12 for the game.

Asay tossed in 22 points to lead all scorers.

Dylan DeMaris had nine points and Peter Strasser scored eight for the Wolverines

The Wolverines face Bear Creek on the road, Wednesday, Dec. 11, and are home to host Darrington, Saturday, in their Northwest 1A/2B League opener; tip off is 1:30 p.m.
