Trails committee meeting scheduled for April 3

The April meeting is the Thursday, April 3. Please join us in the Island Rec Meeting Room located at 580 Guard Street. Entry is via the parking lot, off Jensen Alley.

The meeting kicks off at noon and runs about an hour. Looking forward to sharing a successful year of trail projects.

March minutes were as follows:

The San Juan Island Trails Committee met in the Island Rec conference room at noon on Thursday, March 13. Board members present were Mark Noyes (chair) and Tanja Williamson (secretary); Allison Moalli (Island Rec Liaison); and 13 members of the public. 25 hours reported worked on general trails and nine for Roche Harbor, for a total of 34 volunteer trail hours.

Chair’s Report – Chair, Mark Noyes, gave an update on Frog Song and Horse Tail Trails. Mark spoke with Eric Stone, San Juan County Surveyor, and local Scoutmaster. Eric said Scouts are interested in working on both projects and installing puncheons. He asked if Trails could provide supplies/materials and Scouts will install.

Mark did not have an update regarding Friday Harbor Labs.

Old Military Road Trail Update – Dave reported public works will begin their Bailer Hill Road reconstruction project early April and noted it will have added paved, four-foot shoulders on both sides of the road along the length of the project to provide safety accommodations for bicycle and pedestrian traffic.

San Juan County Conservation Land Bank Update – Tanja shared the Land Bank is hosting a community meeting regarding Prescribed Fire in the San Juan Islands on March 13 and staff has been busy hosting planting parties at Cady Mountain and Beaverton Marsh Preserves.

KYI Walks – First KYI Walk will take place in April, walking through the Three Meadows neighborhood. Dave Zeretzke will be the lead. No dogs allowed on this walk.

Announcements – American Hiking Society is offering a 2025 National Trails Day micro-grant program. The grant is designed to reduce barriers for underrepresented communities to participate in meaningful events in celebration of the 33rd annual American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day® on June 7, 2025. Website Update – Jonathan hopes to have something by the end of April. He will meet with the sub-committee soon to show a draft.

New Business – Jeff suggested a trail to cut through Friday Harbor High School grounds, behind the track/football field, between Park and Guard Streets. Jeff will follow up.
