Celebrate the Oscars with the Friday Harbor Film Festival at Brickworks on Nichols Street in Friday Harbor at 5 p.m., Saturday, March 3.
Participants will celebrate the Oscars by screening the trailers of the top contenders for Best Picture and Best Documentary and then voting on the winner of their choice for great prizes.
The documentary with the most votes will be selected for the 2018 Friday Harbor Film Festival. Festivities will begin with wine and appetizers, allowing lots of time to preview the great silent auction items, which includes local products, services, art, and jewelry. Dinner will follow, while attendees screen the trailers of the Oscar-nominated films.
Throughout the evening, participants will have the opportunity to bid on an array of 12 live-auction items, including getaways to Bellingham, Victoria and Yellow Island, a three-day cruise, gourmet dinners, and oyster feed.
The talented comic and actor Kent Loomer will host the exciting live auction. In 2004, Kent was selected by actor Ryan Stiles to be one of the original main stage ensemble performers at his improvisational comedy club The Upfront Theatre in Bellingham, where he continues to appear regularly today. He has also worked in several professional acting roles in film and TV.
The event will be black tie, so plan to dress in the finest Hollywood-inspired attire or as a favorite film character. Prizes will be given for best costumes. Volunteers have also notified staff at local stores, including Girlfriends, Second Act, the Friday Harbor Fire Department Thrift Store, and the costume shop at San Juan Community Theatre, to help attendees prepare to be their most glamorous selves. The costume shop’s hours are Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Auction proceeds help support the film festival, documentary filmmakers, the free student tickets program, Best of the Fest Film Series, and the upgrading of the software, sound and video equipment for a high-quality screening experience.
